Shinai

A shinai is four bamboo slats held by a leather cap, a string, and a leather tie. The sakigawa is the cap at the tip. The tsuru is the string that runs to the handle. The nakayui is the leather tie partway down the blade. The drawings are numbered in the order to follow.

  1. Fit the sakigawa

    The sakigawa is the leather cap on the tip.

  2. String the tsuru

    The tsuru runs from the tip to the handle and holds the slats together.

  3. Tie the nakayui

    The nakayui is a short leather strip tied around the slats, partway down from the tip.
