Getting Started

Before beginning kendo, we encourage you to observe one of our practice sessions (see schedule above). Contact us first so that we know when to expect you. Our instructors are available before and after each session to answer your questions and process new applications.

Once you enroll in our class, the only mandatory equipment is your own shinai. If you need help purchasing one, we recommend contacting a local kendo supplier, such as Arthur from KendoStyle.

When you’re ready to deepen your kendo experience, you’ll eventually need a uniform and protective armor (bogu). These, along with shinai, can be purchased from various vendors at your convenience. Our dojo sometimes has rental bogu available, so feel free to ask about current availability.

Please check out our resources page for more information about kendo.

Signing Up

When you've decided that kendo is for you, you can sign up for the classes via the location's recreation center's website:

The expected fees vary by rank, location, and age. See the membership information page for more details on the fees, signup forms, and how to pay.

Visitation

Unfortunately, the recreational centers do not allow tryout classes or free visits, so to attend, you must sign up through them. It'll be about $32/$40 per season depending on your residency status.

If you want to visit from another AUSKF dojo, please reach out to us.

Please note that there are no changing rooms, so expect to use the restrooms to get dressed. Most people get dressed before arriving to practice.
